1 Past simple and Present perfect
Простое прошедшее и настоящее совершенное времена1) Если нужно сообщить о чем-то, что произошло в период времени, который длится вплоть до момента речи, используется Present perfect. Если же мы рассказываем о событии, которое произошло в некоторый период времени, закончившийся до момента речи, используется Past simple.Scientists have discovered medicines for many diseases this century — Ученые изобрели лекарства от многих болезней в этом веке.
Scientists discovered medicines for many diseases in the 19th century — Ученые изобрели лекарства от многих болезней в девятнадцатом веке.
2) И Present perfect, и Past simple используются при описании события, повторявшегося в прошлом. Present perfect предпочтительнее использовать, когда нужно подчеркнуть,что данное событие может произойти еще раз.He has written three novels — Он написал три романа (может быть, напишет еще несколько).
He wrote three novels and died in 1983 — Он написал три романа и умер в 1983 году ( больше уже не напишет).
3) И Present perfect, и Past simple могут использоваться при описании некоторого состояния или положения дел, имевшего место в прошлом. При этом Present perfect используют, когда данное положение дел по-прежнему имеет место, а Past simple в том случае, если ситуация к моменту речи изменилась.I have owned this shop for ages — Я владею этим магазином уже целую вечность.
I owned a shop when we lived in London — Я владел магазином, когда мы жили в Лондоне.
4)а) В репортажах и новостях новые события обычно вводятся в рассмотрение с помощью Present perfect. За ним следут Past simple, с помощью которого даются детали описываемого события.The famous artist John Cramp has died of cancer. He was 50 and had two children — Умер от рака знаменитый художник Джон Кремп. Ему было 50 лет, и он имел двоих детей.
б) Часто Present perfect и Past simple комбинируются в контекстах такого типа:- Have you visited Stockholm? — Ты ездил в Стокгольм? ( visit употреблен в Present perfect, так как неизвестно, когда имела место поездка и имела ли она место вообще)
- Yes, I have but I didn't see Nils — Да, ездил, но я не встречался с Нильсом ( see употреблен в Past simple, так как подразумевается я его не видел тогда, когда был в Стокгольме)

2 Present perfect
а) Утвердительные формы:Утвердительные формы Present perfect образуются с помощью вспомогательного глагола have в настоящем времени и причастия прошедшего времени Past participle смыслового глагола (Main verbs).I have done the exercise.

I have forgotten his name — Я забыл его имя (и не помню его сейчас).

б) Present perfect употребляют, когда хотят объявить нечто или сообщить о чем-то, что произошло только что либо совсем недавно.I've just hurt my elbow — Я вот ушиб локоть.
She hasn't received any letters from him lately — Последнее время она не получала (не получает) от него писем.
в) Present perfect используется при описании события, которое развивалось или повторялось в период времени, охватывающий момент речи. Present perfect употребляется с выражениями, обозначающими период времени, который к моменту речи еще не закончился, такими как today, this morning, this evening, this term, this week, so far, up to now. Момент начала действия может уточняться с помощью временного предлога и союза since, а то, как долго протекало описываемое действие, — с помощью временного предлога for. 3 Past simple
а) Утвердительные формы:I worked
При построении общего вопроса используется вспомогательный глагол do в прошедшем времени ( did), который ставится перед подлежащим (Subject) предложения. Смысловой глагол при этом употребляется в своей основной форме (Basic verb form).в) Отрицательные формы:Отрицательные предложения образуются при помощи вспомогательного глагола do в прошедшем времени ( did), за которым следуют отрицательная частица not/ n't. Смысловой глагол при этом употребляется в своей основной форме Basic verb form.I didn't say that.
Past simple употребляется при описании действия или положения дел, имевшего место в некоторый определенный момент или некоторый период времени в прошлом. При этом обычно не является важным, как долго разворачивалось действие или событие. Существенно, что событие произошло в прошлом и не имеет связи с настоящим. Past simple часто используется в сочетании с такими обозначениями времени как yesterday, in 1956, last year, last week, on Sunday, at seven o'clock и т.д. 4 may, might, can, could: possibility in the future and present
Употребление модальных глаголов "may", "might", "can" и "could" в предположениях о том, что что-то может произойти в настоящем или будущем1)а) В утвердительных предложениях, выражающих предположение о том, что в настоящем или будущем что-то может происходить (произойти), используются глаголы may и might. Между may и might в этом случае практически нет разницы, однако, might выражает большую степень сомнения в возможности описываемого события.They might be walking in the garden now — Возможно, они сейчас прогуливаются в саду (но маловероятно).
б) С тем же значением предположения о возможности может употребляться глагол could, но не глагол can. could используется в случае, когда нет большой уверенности в том, что предположение является верным.Глагол could в данном значении используется по преимуществу в сочетании с глаголом be. Глагол be при этом может, в частности, являться составляющей Continuous infinitive или Simple infinitive passive (см. Infinitive 2б и 2д).Why is he upset? It may/might/could be because he lost his bag — Почему он расстроен? Может быть, потому, что он потерял свою сумку.
He may/might/could be waiting for us at the station — Возможно, он ждет нас на станции.

в) Глагол can употребляется в утвердительных предложениях, если нужно выразить, что нечто возможно в принципе, а не применительно к данной частной ситуации. В официальном языке инструкций и предписаний can в таких случаях может заменяться на may.I wonder where Tom is. - He may/might/could/*can be at the library. — Интересно, где же Том. - Он может быть в библиотеке (в данном случае нельзя использовать глагол can)
2) В вопросах о возможности глагол may и might практически не используются. Вместо may и might можно использовать, например, could(n't) или выражение be likely.3)а) В отрицательных предложениях, в частности, в предложениях со словами only, hardly, never, для выражения невозможности используются can't (cannot) и could not (couldn't).There couldn't/can't be a connection between the two paragraphs — Не может быть никакой связи между этими двумя параграфами.
б) Разница между сочетаниями may not/ might not и can't/ couldn't состоит в следующем:may not/ might not указывает на возможность того, что нечто не является верным (may not/mightn't + A = возможно, не A).can't/ couldn't указывает на невозможность того, что нечто является верным (can't/couldn't + A = невозможно, чтобы A).4) При сообщении о событии, которое, возможно, произойдет в будущем к какому-то моменту времени, используется конструкция may/might + perf. infinitive (см. 9 Passive
↑ VerbФорма страдательного залога употребляется в предложении, подлежащим которого является предмет, на который направлено действие, выраженное глаголом. Таким образом, объект глагола в активном залоге соответствует подлежащему глагола в страдательном залоге (ср. My uncle made this table — Мой дядя сделал этот стул и This table was made by my uncle — Этот стол сделал мой дядя).а) Форма страдательного залога образуется по схеме be + Past participle. Вспомогательный глагол be может употребляться в форме различных времен, а также в форме инфинитива или причастия настоящего времени. Исключения составляют времена Future continuous, Present perfect continuous и Past perfect continuous, отсутствующие в страдательном залоге. б) В разговорном английском языке вместо глагола be может использоваться глагол get. Обычно эта конструкция используется в том случае, если объект, выраженный подлежащим, подвергается действию неконтролируемых им сил, часто неблагоприятному, либо сам прилагает усилия к тому, чтобы направленное на него, но выгодное ему действие осуществилось. 3) В английском языке, как и в русском, форму страдательного залога образуют переходные глаголы (см. Transitive and intransitive verbs). Непереходные глаголы (не имеющие дополнения, например, sleep - спать, die - умирать) употребляются только в действительном залоге. Также в страдательном залоге не употребляются переходные глаголы, выражающие постоянное состояние или отношение (например, have - иметь, lack - недоставать, resemble - быть похожим). Однако в английском языке, в отличие от русского, непереходные глаголы, требующие предложного дополнения, могут образовывать форму страдательного залога (при этом предлог остается при глагольной форме)She was looked at with admiration — На нее смотрели с восхищением
4) Субъект действительного оборота может быть выражен дополнением с предлогом by в соответствующем страдательном обороте. Если дополнение, которое могло бы быть подлежащим в конструкции с действительным залогом, называет инструмент или содержимое какого-либо пространства, используется предлог with.The letter was written by John — Письмо было написано Джоном

16 Adverbial clause of purpose
1) Придаточное предложение со значением цели. Отвечает на вопросы What for? For what purpose? (зачем? с какой целью?).
